    IELTS国际英语水平测试由英国文化委员会(The British Council)、英国剑桥大学测试中心(The University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicat - UCLES) 及澳大利亚高校国际开发署(IDP Education Australia)共同举办。1990年4月该考试在中国开始推广。
    IELTS考试包括两类：
    学术类（Academic）目前较多适用于留学。
    培训类（General Training ）目前较多适用于移民。
    不论哪种考试，同一次都使用同一份试卷，且只考英语水平不考专业知识。
    IELTS是前往英国，加拿大，澳大利亚，新西兰等英联邦国家留学或定居所要求的英语水平考试。目前我国公派到英国学习的访问学者和攻读硕士，博士学位的人员均需要参加此项考试。1998年年初，加拿大大使馆调整移民方案，凡雅思考试达5分的申请人均可优先加入，雅思成绩同时也是移民新西兰，澳大利亚，加拿大等国家的一项主要审核指标。2000年年底，澳大利亚宣布申请留学澳大利亚的学生必须提供雅思成绩，而不在接受托福成绩。

Listening & Reading 有0.5分档次（有半分）
Writing & Speaking 只有整数档次（没有半分）
总分：为四项得分平均后，除0.5分外，每次进一个单位（0.5），不能使用四舍五入。
    例如：
    听力分数 Listening Band 7.0
    阅读分数 Reading Band 8.0
    写作分数 Writing Band 6.0
    口语分数 Speaking Band 7.0
    平均分(7.0+8.0+6.0+7.0)/4=7.0
    总分：7.0

    写作分数 Writing Band 5.0
    口语分数 Speaking Band 6.0
    平均分(6.0+6.0+5.0+6.0)/4=5.5

最新信息：自07年7月起，雅思考试中写作和口试的评分标准也调整为0.5分档次（有半分）。
　
    听力部分（学术类和培训类试卷一致）30分钟
    通常有4段语音（独白部分及2人或多人对话部分）。共40道左右的小题，且只听一遍不重复。考生在做此部分时应边听边做，待全做完后再填写到答题纸上。
    阅读部分（学术类和培训类试卷不同）60分钟
    两类试题具体内容在此部分不同，但基本结构相似，都是以三段文章为基础，不到3000字共40题左右。
    其区别主要是培训类考题侧重于日常生活中或是工作中的问题,学术类考题会加入考生学业上的探讨。
    写作部分（学术类和培训类试卷第1单元不同，第2单元一致）60分钟
    学术类写作部分共1小时，分2大单元（Task 1&Task 2）；（Task 1）通常考题以图片、表格、曲线图为基本形式，考生根据所给的资料，写出150个字以上的文章来叙述主题。
    培训类的（Task 1）考生以写一封信来应对考题中所给予的模拟状况或问题。（Task 2）两类非常类似，考生就考题，用250字文章发表见解。
    口语部分（学术类 和 培训类试卷一致）15分钟
    在口语部分主考官首先会和考生寒暄1-2分钟，然后主考官会引导考生谈一些一般性的话题3分钟左右，接着主考官会抽出一张卡片由考生根据卡片上的内容向考官提问3-4分钟，最后一部分是考官对考生个人计划的了解共3分钟左右。
    9分 Expert User. Has fully operational command of the language: appropriate, accurate and fluent with complete understanding.
    8分 Very Good User. Has fully operational command of the language with only occasional unsystematic inaccuracies and inappropriacies. Misunderstandings may occur in unfamiliar situations. Handles complex detailed argumentation well.
    7分 Good User. Has operational command of the language, though with occasional inaccuracies, inappropriacies and misunderstandings in some situations. Generally handles complex language well and understands detailed reasoning.
    6分 Competent User. Has generally effective command of the language despite some inaccuracies, inappropriacies and misunderstandings. Can use and understand fairly complex language, paricularly in familiar situations.
    5分 Modest User. Has partial command of the language, coping with overall meaning in most situations, though is likely to make many mistakes.Should be able to handle basic communication in own field.
    4分 Limited User. Basic competence is limited to familiar situations. Has frequent problems in understanding and expression. Is not able to use complex language.
    3分 Extremely Limited User. Conveys and understands only general meaning in very familiar situations. Frequent breakdowns in communication occur.
    2分 Intermittent User. No real communication is possible except for the most basic information using isolated words or short formulae in familiar situations and to meet immediate needs. Has great difficulty understanding spoken and written English.
    1分 Non User. Essentially has no ability to use the language beyond possibly a few isolated words.
    

英联邦国家留学和移民的雅思成绩要求：
    留学方面：英国预科学习需要4.5分以上，英国通常需要6分以上，加拿大通常需要6分以上，澳大利亚必须递交5分以上，新加坡需要6.5分，挪威、芬兰、奥地利等欧共体国家要求留学者分数达到5.5分以上。
    移民方面：澳大利亚技术移民申请者各项需要5分，新西兰技术移民需要申请者达到5分，加拿大技术移民如需免面试需要申请者（在阅读、写作、口语）达到5分（只有一次考试机会）。
